Keeping their distance, a doe and a buck cautiously make their way through the sawgrass and shallow water of Everglades National Park. In The Seminole and the Slave, Osceola teaches Sam how to hunt for deer. During the war, fresh venison in the camp would do wonders for morale, not to mention providing much-needed protein and nutrition for the warriors. Recently, deer from the Carolinas were shipped down to the Everglades in an attempt to diversify the gene pool. Unfortunately, every one of the imported deer died from a condition called "hoof-rot", caused by the damp ground and ever-present water. Only deer that have been living in the Everglades for many generations are immune to the condition.
