Ape Canyon Trail #234. These two images show the lahar, or mud slide, that tore down the south face of Mt. St. Helens soon after the May, 1980 eruption began. Glaciers and the snowpack melted, creating floods of mud and debris. These photos were taken last July; to the right you can see snow at the base of the mountain.
